Behind the Scenes of the Auto Livery Project
The concept of our Limited Edition Glass Art Pieces is to design a panel for an actual Jackson Hole business in operation between 1910 and 1920. Once the copy is established, each edition gets a variety of thumbnail sketches, followed by redraws and adjustments in an effort to work out a final line art drawing. That line art is used throughout the process for screens, acid resists, sandblast resists, and lastly to the finished lettering, outlines and ornamentation.

This page was added to this site to give potential clients an idea of what really goes on behind the scenes for a layout on just one of the projects.

After spending hours at the Jackson Hole Historical Society, I found this ad in the Jackson’s Hole Courier. The words "Cheaper Than a Team Hire" were in a different ad for the same company the year before.
The words contained in the two ads gave me the vintage wording for the design, but as you can see, there was no artwork.
Most projects, including this one, had numerous thumbnail and concept sketches. The one of the right was the chosen thumbnail for the Auto Livery project. The original sketch was done on newsprint with a sepia tone pencil. Besides the original main sketch, you can see some of the shorthand notes about borders and details.
After a little research on the clothing of the day, I drew this little tourist which was later pasted onto a 1915 Buick image, seen below. The driver and lady passenger each received a similar pencil sketch element.
According to the ad in the 1917 newspaper, the vehicle was a 1915 Buick, so I purchased a few old car books. This one was perfect for my needs. Once all the figures were pasted over the old photo, I hand inked the image on a sheet of velum, as seen in the final line art below.
The image on the left became the main line art for this project. Additional outlines, shades, trees, and letter centers were added to the artwork, but still, the artwork remained amazingly close to the original concept drawing.

Each glass plate was painstakingly decorated with gold leaf, pearl, and paint with acid etching or glue-chipped accents.
Several of the finished Limited Edition panels are still available for $2000 each.
